FIRENZE EXCURSION
The capital city of the region of
Tuscany, acrossed by the river Arno, it was founded by Julius Caesar
in the 59 b.C. and called Florentia. Historically, it has been a
world centre in terms of art, architecture, intellectualism and the
age of great splendour was the Renaissance. Florence is one of the
most enchanting cities in Europe and it’s very renowned for its
monuments and museums containing some of Michelangelo’s most famous
works.
The Academia’s Gallery exhibits art used by the Academy’s art
instructors during the Renaissance to teach students. Here it’s
possible see the famous Statue of David by Michelangelo, as well as
other important Italian works of art known all over the world.
Piazza del Duomo is the site of the principal places of religious
interest: the Baptistry, a Romanesque building, built between
11th-12th century, with beautiful bronze doors and mosaics; the
Giotto Bell Tower, built in 14th century; and the Duomo which is one
of the world’s largest Cathedrals that boasts many works by famous
artists.
In Piazza della Signoria it’s possible admire the Palazzo
Vecchio (Old Palace) built in the early 14th century and after few
minutes the Uffizi Gallery is located, the finest art gallery in the
world, that displays a wide collection of Italian and foreign art.
Then Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) built in the 14th century, and the
fascinating Church of Santa Croce (13th century, Gothic), containing
the tombs of Michelangelo, Galilei, Alfieri, Machiavelli, Foscolo
and others great men.
